Neuroblastoma
symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of neuroblastomas
Neuroblastoma tumors are usually found outside the central nervous system particularly in the adrenal gland. When they occur in the brain, they tend to be found in children under the age of ten. They are malignant and tend to grow rapidly. They can spread through the spinal fluid.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of intracranial neuroblastomas are increased pressure in the head with headache, nausea and vomiting. Seizures are also common. Depending on the location of the tumor, weakness of one side of the body can be seen.
Diagnosis
As always, a careful history and physical examination are the first steps in diagnosis. CT or MRI scanning performed without and with intravenous contrast material is the next step.
Treatment
Treatment of intracranial neuroblastoma usually requires a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Sometimes radiation treatment to the spine is necessary.
