Demetrius Klee Lopes, M.D., is a member of the Chicago Institute of Neurosurgery and Neuroresearch (CINN); a founding member of the CINN Institute for Brain and Stroke Care; Director of CINN Neurovascular and Stroke Intervention Program; and an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology at Rush Medical College, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Lopes is the most experienced endovascular neurosurgeon in the Chicago area. He is highly skilled in neuroendovascular therapy, which is an innovative approach to the treatment of brain and spinal cord diseases from inside the blood vessels. Dr. Lopes specializes in the revascularization of the brain for cerebral ischemia, stroke and the conditions leading up to stroke, and the treatment of brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations

Bilingual in English and Portuguese, Dr. Lopes began his medical education in 1987 at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. After completing his doctorate in medicine in 1993, Dr. Lopes moved to Chicago where he continued his medical education and completed surgical internships at the University of Illinois and Cook County Hospitals. In 1994, he accepted a residency in neurology at the Indiana University Medical Center, and in 1995 accepted a residency in neurological surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

After completing his residency in neurological surgery, Dr. Lopes remained at the State University of New York where he accepted and completed an endovascular fellowship. During the fellowship, Dr. Lopes enhanced his skills in the neuroendovascular treatment of central nervous system diseases. Dr. Lopes joined CINN in 2001.

Dr. Lopes is an active author, lecturer and researcher. He has written many articles and chapters on various aspects of neuroendovascular therapy, including carotid stenting. His current research interest is in endovascular neuroresearch and hemodynamic studies.
