A board-certified neurosurgeon with nearly 20 years of experience, Dr. Heiferman treats the full spectrum of neurosurgical disorders. He is an authority on the surgical and non-surgical treatment of back and neck problems. He is well versed in sophisticated instrumentation techniques used in complex spine reconstruction as well as minimally invasive procedures and artificial disc replacement surgery, which have shown to reduce post-operative pain and speed recovery time. Dr. Heiferman is highly regarded for his conservative approach to patient care. He recommends invasive surgery only when non-surgical or minimally invasive alternatives have been unsuccessful or ruled inappropriate. Dr. Heiferman also has a special interest and expertise in caring for patients with trigeminal neuralgia and peripheral nerve diseases such as carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar nerve disorders.

Dr. Heiferman earned his medical degree in 1982 from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Heiferman remained at Northwestern, where he undertook his general surgery internship and neurological surgery residency. After completing his residency in 1988, Dr. Heiferman held a fellowship in neurosurgical oncology at CINN. He joined the CINN medical staff in 1989.

Keenly interested in the development of new neurosurgical tools, Dr. Heiferman has conducted research on the use of lasers in neurosurgery. He has served as chair of the neuroscience section for the Society of Photo Optical Instrumentation Engineers and holds memberships in several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the North American Spine Society.
